Campus Bio‑Medico One Health Report: Italians 'satisfied but not overly'

The 3rd One Health Report, produced by the Campus Bio‑Medico University of Rome in collaboration with the Istituto Piepoli, examines the relationship between urban quality of life, health and social and environmental sustainability. The study highlights perceptions, priorities and potential actions to improve livability in Italian cities.

Key findings show that 61% of Italians declare themselves satisfied with where they live, while only 25% are very satisfied. Positive contributors include tranquillity, community ties, availability of green spaces, environmental quality, efficient services and social opportunities.

  • Top priorities reported: better public transport (40%), safety (34%), employment (34%), health services (33%) and environmental quality (30%).
  • Housing preferences: 30% would choose to live in a well-served suburb, compared with 16% who prefer the historic centre.
  • Territorial outlook: 38% believe smaller towns will become more livable than large cities; medium-sized cities are gaining appeal.

The research, based on discussions with sixteen opinion leaders and a representative sample of one thousand citizens, places special emphasis on suburbs, now seen as strategic areas for new urban models. These areas are being reframed as opportunities for regeneration that combine social, economic and ecological transition goals.

The Report also highlights weaknesses in public‑private collaboration and the need to streamline decision-making and authorization processes to speed up effective interventions. Respondents consider institutions primarily responsible for territorial improvements but often perceive them as distant; the third sector is seen as more effective despite limited resources.

The proposed vision follows the One Health paradigm, integrating human, environmental and social health as a practical guide to designing more sustainable and inclusive urban spaces, favouring polycentric cities of interconnected yet autonomous neighbourhoods.
