Easter at the museum in Tuscany: free Sunday and Easter Monday openings
For Easter 2026 the first Sunday of the month falls on the holiday, allowing visitors to enter many state-run museums in Tuscany for free on Sunday, 5 April 2026. Several institutions will also remain open on Monday, 6 April with regular admission, creating an extended weekend to explore collections, monuments and archaeological sites.
Highlights and special initiatives
- Florence — Museo di San Marco: the Sala del Beato Angelico reopens with a new display of 33 panel paintings, including works shown publicly for the first time; upstairs, the Rothko in Florence section pairs five modern paintings with frescoes that inspired the artist.
- Arezzo — Archaeological Museum “Gaio Cilnio Mecenate”: exhibition on the Minerva of Arezzo with an updated interpretative path and a calendar of events, workshops and educational activities.
- Arezzo — Casa Vasari: the Camera di Abramo and the hanging garden are accessible again; audio/video guides in Italian Sign Language are provided for key works in some venues.
- Other sites: the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art in Arezzo, the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions (Palazzo Taglieschi) and the Sodo archaeological area with Etruscan tombs are available to visitors.
- Abbey of Soffena (Castelfranco Piandiscò): open on Easter Monday to view late-Gothic and Renaissance frescoes, including an Annunciation by Scheggia.
- Elba Island — Villa San Martino: visits to the Napoleonic residence in Portoferraio are available during the holiday period.
