Cycling along the Adda River is like flipping through a history book written on the water. From Lecco all the way to Rivolta d'Adda, this river, which rises in the Alps and flows towards the Po, tells five hundred years of hydraulic engineering, mills, power plants, and above all, the brilliant intuitions of Leonardo da Vinci, who studied, designed, and dreamed up seemingly impossible machines here.
The Naviglio di Paderno is the masterpiece that will leave you speechless. This six-kilometer artificial canal bypasses the rocky drops of the Adda with a series of locks that allowed boats to overcome a 27-meter difference in height. Leonardo designed the lock system that still works perfectly today: seeing them in action is like witnessing a live show of Renaissance engineering.
Walking or cycling along the banks means traversing constantly changing landscapes. You move from the rocks and rapids of the Paderno d'Adda area, where the river rages between granite boulders, to the green expanses of the plain where the water flows slow and silent among poplars and weeping willows. Every bend reveals different views: sometimes ancient mills still turning, driven by the current, sometimes hydroelectric power plants that transform the river's force into clean energy.
Industrial history is everywhere here. Red brick chimneys, abandoned turbines, railway bridges crossing the water: these are the remnants from when this valley was the industrial heart of Lombardy. But instead of being ugly, these industrial archaeological sites have integrated into the landscape, creating a fascinating mix of nature and the history of labor.
The villages along the river retain an atmosphere of times past: Trezzo sull'Adda with its medieval castle dominating the rapids, Vaprio d'Adda where Leonardo stayed in the Melzi villa, and Cassano d'Adda with its historic bridges. Every town has its typical trattoria where you can stop after cycling to enjoy risotto con luganega (sausage risotto) and local wines.
Wildlife has reclaimed the river: kingfishers, Grey Herons, curious nutrias swimming, and even a few otters that have returned to populate these river habitats in recent years. Fishing here is a pleasure for those who love tranquility: trout, chub, and pike abound in the clean waters.
The park is perfect for bicycle excursions: the cycle path follows the river for kilometers on flat routes suitable for families and weekend cyclists. You can start from any train station along the route: Lecco, Bergamo, and Milan are all well-connected. Bring a camera to capture the Leonardesque locks and river landscapes, a water bottle for stops, and curiosity to discover how genius and nature can coexist in perfect harmony.
