Easter 2026 in Southern Italy: Tradition, Sunshine, and Festive Tables in Five Unmissable Cities

Autore: Giansalvo Pio Fortunato14/03/2026 10:45

2026 is approaching, and with the date set for Sunday, April 5th, the first real long weekend of spring is shaping up to be the perfect opportunity for a getaway to discover Italian traditions and landscapes. Forecasts suggest over 12 million Italians will be traveling. If you're among them and your heart is set on the south, you're in the right place. Southern Italy offers an unparalleled mix of spirituality, hospitality, and already mild weather, with temperatures potentially reaching 26°C .

From Holy Week rituals to Easter Monday picnics with a sea view, here are five cities in Southern Italy where you can experience an unforgettable Easter weekend.

1.Naples and its Gulf: between Faith and Pastiera

The undisputed capital of Campanian Easter tradition, Naples is the ideal destination for those seeking an all-encompassing experience. The long weekend, which for many schools runs from April 2nd to 7th, allows you to immerse yourself in the city's ancient rites. On Good Friday (April 3rd), the historic quarters come alive with solemn processions, while Saturday is perfect for getting lost in the alleyways of the center and preparing for the grand celebration.

Sunday is all about family and food: it's impossible not to be tempted by a lunch featuring casatiello (the savory symbol of Neapolitan Easter) and a slice of pastiera, the quintessential dessert made with ricotta, wheat, and orange blossom water. To the delight of young and old, traditional chocolate eggs are also a must. Then, on Easter Monday, a countryside or seaside trip is a must: the Caracciolo seafront, Castel dell'Ovo, and Virgiliano Park offer breathtaking views of the Gulf, perfect for an outdoor picnic.

2.Salerno and the Amalfi Coast: an explosion of Spring

Just a few kilometers separate Naples from Salerno, which is already predicted to be sold out for this Easter. Projections indicate hotel occupancy could exceed 80%, a sign that the city is becoming an increasingly popular destination. Choosing Salerno means having the best of both worlds: the lively historic center and its famous Trieste seafront, as well as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast.

The spring weather makes walks among the artisan shops very pleasant, while on Easter Monday you can treat yourself to a trip to Capaccio-Paestum to admire the Greek temples surrounded by blooming flowers or venture into the nearby Cilento area. Its strategic location makes Salerno the perfect base for those wanting to explore the province without giving up the comforts of a city.

3.Apulia of the Trulli: Polignano a Mare and the Crystal-Clear Sea

Apulia confirms itself as one of the most popular regions for spring tourism, thanks to a sea that already offers intense emotions in April. The symbol of Easter 2026 is Polignano a Mare, with its famous Cala Lama Monachile cove. Imagine the scene on Easter Monday: the warm sun, the rock in front of the Borbone bridge, and the sound of waves crashing onto the small pebble beach.

It's the perfect picture for a day of relaxation, away from the summer crowds. The historic center, perched on the cliff, offers romantic views and small restaurants with a vista. For those who want to venture further, the hinterland offers authentic villages and farmhouses where you can taste Easter lamb accompanied by a good Primitivo wine.

4.Sicily of the Mysteries: Trapani and the emotion of the Processions

If you are looking for an intense and engaging experience, western Sicily is the right choice. Trapani, in particular, is famous worldwide for the Good Friday Procession of the Mysteries. It is one of the oldest and most heartfelt religious events in Italy: for 24 consecutive hours, groups of faithful carry twenty sculptural groups depicting the Passion of Christ on their shoulders through the city streets.

An experience that combines faith, art, and popular tradition, capable of moving even visitors less connected to the religious sphere. The mild climate and temperatures that are beginning to become pleasantly warm then allow you to combine a visit to the city with excursions to the nearby Egadi Islands or the Marsala salt pans, for a weekend that already smells of summer.

5.Matera: a timeless experience among the Sassi

Although geographically on the border between Basilicata and Apulia, Matera deserves a place of honor on this list. Spending Easter in the 2019 European Capital of Culture means experiencing a unique atmosphere. The Holy Week rites here are ancient and evocative, with processions that wind through the Sassi, creating a spectacular union between spirituality and the urban landscape.
The April weather offers bright days perfect for exploring the city carved into the tuff rock, among cave churches and quarries. Easter Monday in the surroundings of Matera can turn into a discovery of the fascinating landscape of the gravine (ravines) and nearby villages, with picnics at farmhouses offering genuine products of Lucanian tradition.

To fully enjoy these destinations, the key word is advance booking. Accommodation facilities are already filling up, and prices, as always during peak seasons, tend to rise as the holiday approaches.
Whether you choose lively Naples, romantic Polignano, or mystical Trapani, Southern Italy offers an Easter capable of warming the heart even before the spring sun warms the skin. Happy travels and Happy Easter to everyone!
