Cittadella Park in Pisa: works progress and an archaeological sector re-emerges
During the technical inspection carried out on the morning of 18 May 2026, the Cittadella Park construction site showed notable progress. The intervention pairs archaeological excavation with urban green redevelopment to return a multifunctional area with historical and cultural value to the city.
- Archaeological excavation: a stretch of the foundations of the ancient Arsenals has been uncovered. The dig, estimated at about €1.8 million, will clarify the site's historical stratification.
- Event arena: the cavea designed by Giovanni Michelucci has been refurbished and fitted with modern lighting, acoustics and video surveillance systems to host performances and cultural events.
- Social areas: plans include spaces for food services, children's play areas and lawns for relaxation and outdoor activities.
- Green spaces and pathways: hedges and brambles that hid original routes have been removed; new plantings are planned to strengthen the park's vegetation.
- Wall walkways: restoration and adaptation of paths linked to historic towers are under consideration to create a continuous historical-landscape route.
Work status and preservation: technicians have confirmed adherence to the timetable and the quality of the works. Local authorities emphasize the project's importance for protecting historical evidence and improving public access to the site.
