Corfinio launches UNESCO nomination for Italic heritage

Corfinio has initiated an institutional process to obtain UNESCO recognition for the historical memory of the Italic Civilization and the Italic League. The initiative, titled "Ove Italia Nacque" (Where Italy Was Born), highlights the town's role during the Social War (91–88 BC), when Corfinio was declared capital and the name "Italia" first appeared on local coinage.

Goals and approach of the nomination

The nomination aims to safeguard and pass on this historical memory as intangible cultural heritage of universal value. Key goals include:

  • Documenting the historical legacy and cultural practices related to the Italic League;
  • Building a network among municipalities, universities, heritage authorities and research centers for a shared scientific pathway;
  • Promoting the values of inclusion and representation born in that era across the connected territories;
  • Enhancing archaeological and landscape assets through cultural projects and public access.

Local interventions and public access

Alongside the nomination process, the local administration has implemented concrete measures to enhance the historic landscape: a monumental lighting system was completed for the Italic mausoleums along the Tiburtina Valeria and the Corfiniense provincial road. This project, supported by private patrons and local firms, brings these monumental tombs into nighttime visibility, restoring their presence and improving public enjoyment.

Why visit and how to get involved

The nomination represents an occasion to explore the area's historical roots and participate in educational activities, guided tours and research projects. To stay involved:

  • follow updates from the Municipality and local cultural institutions;
  • take part in events and educational programs at archaeological sites and museums;
  • support conservation and promotion initiatives aimed at the communities of the Valle Peligna and territories historically linked to the Italic League.

The effort seeks not only international recognition but also to strengthen public knowledge and everyday stewardship of Corfinio's archaeological heritage.
