In the small Molise village of Guardialfiera, overlooking its lake, an intriguing sight occasionally appears: the remains of the Sant'Antonio bridge emerge from the reservoir for short periods. This usually happens in summer or during extended dry spells, creating a dramatic view for visitors to the area.
When the Liscione dam was built in 1977, the Biferno river basin was flooded and the current lake formed, submerging pre-existing structures including the arches of an old bridge known locally as the Sant'Antonio bridge. While local tradition links the site to ancient episodes, documentary evidence suggests later medieval origins, likely around the Angevin period. The apparent mystery of the bridge is primarily explained by fluctuating water levels.
The bridge becomes visible when the water level drops. This is typically during summer months or periods of drought, but there are no fixed dates: visibility depends on weather patterns and reservoir management.
Guardialfiera retains a medieval layout and offers several points of interest for those exploring Italian villages:
Guardialfiera was shortlisted for the "Borgo dei Borghi 2026" recognition, making it an appealing stop for those interested in authentic Italian villages and local traditions.
