The ‘ghost’ bridge of Guardialfiera: when the lake reveals its arches

The ghost bridge of Guardialfiera: a disappearing spectacle

In the small Molise village of Guardialfiera, overlooking its lake, an intriguing sight occasionally appears: the remains of the Sant'Antonio bridge emerge from the reservoir for short periods. This usually happens in summer or during extended dry spells, creating a dramatic view for visitors to the area.

History and explanation

When the Liscione dam was built in 1977, the Biferno river basin was flooded and the current lake formed, submerging pre-existing structures including the arches of an old bridge known locally as the Sant'Antonio bridge. While local tradition links the site to ancient episodes, documentary evidence suggests later medieval origins, likely around the Angevin period. The apparent mystery of the bridge is primarily explained by fluctuating water levels.

When to visit

The bridge becomes visible when the water level drops. This is typically during summer months or periods of drought, but there are no fixed dates: visibility depends on weather patterns and reservoir management.

What to see and do in the village

Guardialfiera retains a medieval layout and offers several points of interest for those exploring Italian villages:

  • Historic centre: narrow lanes, stone houses and panoramic views over the lake.
  • Santa Maria Assunta church: a building with medieval roots worth visiting.
  • Lake Liscione (Guardialfiera): opportunities for birdwatching and scenic walks.
  • Nature trails: trails around the reservoir suitable for hiking and wildlife observation.

Practical tips

  • Check local information or contact tourist offices to confirm current water levels before traveling: the bridge's reappearance is not guaranteed.
  • Wear appropriate footwear for natural trails and follow signage; some lakeshore areas may have access restrictions.
  • Combine the visit with nearby towns and historic sites to make the most of a regional itinerary in Molise.
  • Respect the environment: take your rubbish with you and avoid disturbing sensitive shoreline areas.

Guardialfiera was shortlisted for the "Borgo dei Borghi 2026" recognition, making it an appealing stop for those interested in authentic Italian villages and local traditions.
