Brindisi: Monument to the Sailor and archaeological area temporarily closed

Visitor flows to Brindisi are increasing, but several archaeological sites and monuments are currently not accessible. The Monument to the Sailor and the San Pietro degli Schiavoni archaeological area are closed for maintenance and safety work.

Which sites are closed and why

These two assets are undergoing different interventions: at the Monument to the Sailor structural inspections of walls and facades have been completed, but the installation of a new safety railing and the restoration of a historic door—dismantled at the end of 2024—are still pending. No definite reopening date has been announced.

The archaeological area beneath the Nuovo Teatro Verdi has been transferred from the Superintendence to the municipality and is reportedly set to open soon. Surveillance will be carried out remotely via cameras monitored by a security agency and staff at municipal control rooms; there will be no on-site personnel.

Other open sites and useful services

Not everything is closed: the Palazzina Belvedere, housing the Faldetta archaeological collection, remains open with extended hours and serves as a welcome point. The "Ribezzo" Archaeological Museum in Piazza Duomo is open and features underwater archaeology exhibits, including the Bronzi di Punta del Serrone. The cathedral, the Church of San Paolo (with its diocesan museum) and the Temple of San Giovanni al Sepolcro are also accessible.

Practical information for visitors

  • Check the municipal infopoint: the office at Palazzo Granafei-Nervegna provides up-to-date information on openings and guided visits.
  • Casa del Turista: the name can mislead visitors about available services (luggage storage, showers) — verify in advance what is actually offered.
  • Public toilets: some areas lack restroom facilities; plan stops accordingly.
  • Signage: directional signs in the historic center and to archaeological sites are often outdated or unclear; bring maps or consult the infopoint.
  • Castle visits: for the Svevo Castle a new visit calendar is pending agreement between local authorities and heritage associations.

Recommendations

If you are visiting Brindisi for cultural reasons, check openings and alternative itineraries in advance. For pilgrims and archaeology enthusiasts there are still many accessible sites with significant collections. Keep in mind that some reopenings depend on technical work and safety approvals, so schedules may change.
