Forlì's Fumettoteca: 'We're not a museum of memories. We need space and vision'

On the second anniversary of the initiative linking the Museo San Domenico with private cultural realities, the National Fumettoteca Alessandro Callegati 'Calle' reviews its work and urges concrete measures to protect and develop a unique national heritage.

Main issue: structural sustainability. After 16 years of activity—largely sustained by volunteers and self-funding—the Fumettoteca highlights the lack of adequate space that leaves much of its collection inaccessible and limits workshops, training and community services.

• The "Six private cultural treasures of the city of Forlì" map (launched in 2024) increased visibility for places like the Fumettoteca, but staff warn it risks remaining mere branding without concrete institutional support.
• The Fumettoteca functions as a Social Community Hub: a comics library and a provider of free services, open even when other libraries are closed.
• Staff call on the municipality for space, vision and investment to turn map inclusion into a sustainable long-term cultural and social project.

Director Gian Luca Umiliacchi notes that being part of the San Domenico route boosted visits but revealed the paradox of an excellence surviving on passion rather than a sustained institutional plan. “We do not ask for celebrations,” Umiliacchi says, “but for space and vision.”
