Cross Unesco project launches in Tirano to boost Alpine mobility and tourism

The Municipality of Tirano hosted the kick-off on Tuesday, April 21 for the Interreg IT-CH Cross Unesco project, a cross-border initiative to rethink mobility and promote slow, sustainable tourism in the Alps.

The project brings together Italian and Swiss institutions, local operators, railway stakeholders and tourism actors to develop integrated solutions that transcend administrative borders and place the traveler at the center.

• Historic trails: enhancing routes between Tirano and Valposchiavo to encourage slow exploration of the territory.
• Cycling paths: creating accessible bike routes to broaden sustainable travel options.
• Transboundary railway community museum: establishing a space to tell the story of Alpine mobility and regional connections.
• Station square redesign: rethinking the area to improve passenger flow and service integration between transport modes.
• Promotion of the Rhaetian Railway: leveraging the UNESCO-linked heritage as an identity asset and development opportunity.

Municipal authorities say the initiative aims not only to upgrade existing infrastructure but to redefine how people move through and experience the territory, positioning Tirano as a reference model for integrated, sustainable Alpine mobility.
