The Council of Ministers on 24 April 2026 approved the start of the procedure to appoint Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi as president of the Lega Navale Italiana (LNI). The designation, put forward by the relevant ministers, is a formal step that requires parliamentary consideration and the subsequent decree of the President of the Republic to be finalized.
Born in Naples in 1953, De Giorgi has had a long career in the Italian Navy: he served as Chief of Staff of the Navy from 2013 to 2016 and led high-profile operations such as Mare Nostrum. His profile merges operational experience with a commitment to maritime safety and marine environmental protection.
The potential presidency follows the expiry of Admiral Donato Marzano’s three-year mandate (2023-2026) and aims to ensure continuity in the LNI’s cultural and associative activities. The LNI promotes sea culture, nautical sports, education and social inclusion across Italy.
If confirmed, De Giorgi’s appointment will be seen as a continuation of institutional engagement with Italy’s maritime and cultural priorities.
