There is a place in Italy where spring explodes, and that place is Merano.
From April 23 to 26, 2026, the Passeggiata Lungo Passirio transforms into the most floral and romantic setting you can imagine: giant plant installations, nurseries from all over Europe, scents chasing each other in the fresh air of South Tyrol, and an atmosphere that makes you want to slow down, to look, to simply be there in nature. Welcome to the Merano Flower Festival, one of the most beautiful spring events on the peninsula.

The official opening is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, April 23 at 11:00 on the Kurhaus Terrace, with a performance by the “Only Dance” school followed by live music. The best way to kick off four days of pure beauty.
Before talking about the event, it’s worth spending a few words on why Merano is the right place for such an event. The city has an absolutely unusual microclimate for the Alps: the surrounding mountains protect it from cold winds, and the result is a territory where camellias bloom next to palm trees, and olive trees grow just a few steps from larches. This magical scenery is simply the result of a wonderful geography.

Against this almost unreal backdrop, along the Kurpromenade, the Liberty-style walkway overlooking the Passirio river, floral installations and plant sculptures created by international garden designers come to life. These beautiful floral sculptures are true ephemeral works of art, designed to amaze and then, inevitably, disappear. The charm of it all lies partly there, in that entirely floral fragility.
The festival is open with free admission from 10:00 to 19:00 (on April 26 until 17:00), and that alone is a great reason to go without overthinking it. But there is plenty to do, see, and taste.
If you’re an early riser, or want to look like one, from April 24 to 26 there is the Petit Déjeuner des Fleurs: a breakfast among the installations by the river, served between 9:30 and 12:00, with products selected from Gallo Rosso farmsteads. It’s hard to find a more elegant way to start the day.
In the afternoon instead, from the 23rd to the 25th, it’s aperitivo time, since from 17:00 to 19:00 you can toast with local products selected in collaboration with Slow Food. A beautiful panorama of flowers will accompany a zero-kilometer aperitif.

For those coming with children, there are creative workshops to build wreaths and natural decorations, and the Flower Quiz, a prize quiz for families with a final draw, designed to bring younger visitors closer to nature in a playful way. Not the usual boring stuff, promised.
And the festival is not just an exhibition to look at, it’s an experience to live. For adults there are hands-on workshops where you can get your hands dirty: you can create your own Kokedama, the traditional Japanese moss ball, or try making mini crochet shoppers or paper earrings using the origami technique.
And then there is the music, with acoustic and live concerts scattered along the promenade throughout the day, because clearly in Merano they know that beauty should also be accompanied by performances that are never ordinary.
The Flower Festival is not an isolated event, it is the beating heart of an entire spring calendar that transforms the city into an even more special place than usual.
Just a few minutes away by cable car are the Gardens of Castel Trauttmansdorff, reopened in April with hundreds of thousands of blooming tulips spread across 80 different botanical landscapes. A must-see for nature lovers. And for those seeking something truly exclusive, the festival opens the doors of private gardens normally inaccessible: this year it’s the turn of the park of Castel Rubein and the garden of Hotel Mignon, two hidden corners of Merano that few have had the chance to see. In the city center, meanwhile, the stalls of the Merano Market offer South Tyrolean craftsmanship and Slow Food Presidia, while the Passirio river comes alive again with rafting and kayaking for those who want to release some adrenaline after so much poetry. In short, there’s something for everyone!

What makes the Merano Flower Festival truly special is not only its aesthetics, although undeniably beautiful, but the fact that behind it there is a philosophy that promotes sustainability, biodiversity, and respect for nature’s timing. In a world that is moving faster and faster, spending four days watching how things grow has something revolutionary about it.
Merano has known this for centuries. Already in the 19th century, European aristocracy, including Empress Sissi, came here to heal with the air and tranquility of the city. We have no better excuses than they did not to visit such a wonderful place.
From April 23 to 26, the spectacle is guaranteed. The Merano Flower Festival is ready to make you fall in love.
