The Ligurian village of Vernazza, one of the Cinque Terre jewels, has approved measures to reduce mass tourism impact and relieve pressure on residents. The rules will come into force on 1 January 2027, with a transitional period for guides and tour operators.
The intent is to improve visitor experience, protect residents' daily life and safeguard fragile public spaces. Similar measures trialed in other coastal villages have helped make visitor flows more manageable.
To ease pressure on the most visited spots, alternative trails encourage exploring the hinterland. The Sentiero Uno is among these, designed to guide visitors toward lesser-known routes and to highlight inland villages and landscapes.
Timing note: nothing changes for summer 2026; the transitional months are intended to allow operators to adapt before sanctions become enforceable on 1 January 2027.
