Vernazza curbs overtourism: new rules and how to visit responsibly

Vernazza curbs overtourism: what changes

The Ligurian village of Vernazza, one of the Cinque Terre jewels, has approved measures to reduce mass tourism impact and relieve pressure on residents. The rules will come into force on 1 January 2027, with a transitional period for guides and tour operators.

Main measures

  • Group size limit: escorted tour groups cannot exceed 25 people. The limit excludes children under 6 and does not apply to school trips.
  • No megaphones for groups larger than 10: guides must use headset systems to avoid noise pollution.
  • Parking and stopping bans in specific streets (such as via Agostino del Santo, via Carruggetto, via San Francesco, via Mazzini, via San Giovanni and via Pensa) when a group obstructs pedestrian flow.
  • Crowd management: in narrow areas like under the railway station or along paths to Monterosso and Corniglia, stopping is not allowed; the later-arriving group must keep distance to prevent gatherings.

Why these rules matter

The intent is to improve visitor experience, protect residents' daily life and safeguard fragile public spaces. Similar measures trialed in other coastal villages have helped make visitor flows more manageable.

Alternatives to the classic route

To ease pressure on the most visited spots, alternative trails encourage exploring the hinterland. The Sentiero Uno is among these, designed to guide visitors toward lesser-known routes and to highlight inland villages and landscapes.

Practical tips for visitors

  • Plan visits outside peak times: avoid crowded weekends and holiday bridges.
  • Follow local signs and rules to avoid blocking pedestrian traffic.
  • Book guides and operators that follow sustainable practices (headsets, small groups, alternative itineraries).
  • Consider exploring less frequented trails and villages for a more authentic experience.

Timing note: nothing changes for summer 2026; the transitional months are intended to allow operators to adapt before sanctions become enforceable on 1 January 2027.
