Vendicari, the kingdom of herons between golden beaches and ancient tuna fisheries

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:29

A corner of paradise, a stopover for migratory birds, where the sound of the wind is interrupted only by their chirping, is hidden on the south-eastern coast of Sicily, between Noto and Marzamemi. This is the Vendicari Wildlife Oasis Oriented Nature Reserve, established in 1984. Numerous flamingos, black-winged stilts (cavalieri d'Italia), and many other species of birds stop at Vendicari, finding one of the most fervent migratory routes here.

Binoculars in hand, you can stop to observe many species of birds, including pink flamingos. But the reserve is not just birds and green nature. The beaches, including the famous Calamosche, also offer an immense spectacle. In particular, Calamosche is nestled between two rocky promontories and offers a tranquil swimming experience.

Vendicari also preserves many historical testimonies, such as the ancient tuna fishery (tonnara) with the Swabian watchtower, which creates a unique scenario, especially at sunset. Furthermore, not far away, there is also an ancient Greek city with mosaics and many remains and ruins. A beach in the reserve is also a gathering point for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), which return there every year to nest. The trails are well-marked; you walk among junipers and aromatic plants, although, be warned, there are no kiosks or bars: everything is in its wild state.

It is therefore important to bring food and water supplies with you so as not to run out. Vendicari is the perfect place if you want a mix of nature, beaches, and peace.
