In Valtellina, in the province of Sondrio, there is an enchanted valley that is often called the "little Italian Yosemite." This is the Val di Mello, one of the most surprising treasures of Lombardy. The main trail is easily walkable and crosses green meadows that are surrounded by gigantic granite walls and large waterfalls. There are also small wooden bridges connecting the higher grounds, and shaded areas perfect for a stop in the middle of summer.
The small Lake of Mello (Laghetto di Mello) is one of the most beautiful and iconic spots, with its emerald waters, and the mountains are reflected in the water on the clearest days. The valley is famous throughout Europe for its beauty. Val di Mello is also a meeting point for climbers who often gather to ascend the legendary walls of Qualido, Cengalo, and Monte Disgrazia.
It is perfect because its rock is very compact and smooth, and thus, especially in the late seventies, a true climbing school was born here. The entire area is protected as a nature reserve because it holds a great biodiversity, including roe deer, eagles, squirrels, as well as orchids and rhododendrons.
Val di Mello is also famous for Melloblocco, which is one of the largest international bouldering gatherings—climbing on boulders. Many young people from all over Europe come here to prove themselves capable of tackling the most challenging mountains. Val di Mello is therefore a perfect destination for a day trip and for spending a different weekend among icy waters and granite walls.
