Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO landscape, is ideal for travelers who prefer to discover Tuscan villages on foot: historic tracks, rolling hills and cypress-lined roads form a perfect backdrop for a slow, mindful weekend.
Below are the towns to include in a short walking trip, with practical directions and photography suggestions.
Pienza is compact and an excellent starting point. Piazza Pio II provides sweeping views across the valley; you can comfortably explore the historic center in 2–3 hours while stopping for photos and a coffee.
Small but rich in character: the village can be crossed in 30–60 minutes, but stay longer for the cathedral and the Giardino delle Terme. A short walk leads to the Madonna di Vitaleta chapel along the iconic cypress avenue.
The village center is built around a large thermal basin. Walking around the basin and through the nearby Parco dei Mulini offers intimate scenes of water, steam and old mills.
If time allows, Maremma presents a wilder side of Tuscany. The Maremma Regional Park has marked walking routes suitable for families; Magliano in Toscana and Orbetello are great for a half-day on foot.
Planning a slow weekend in Val d'Orcia means minimizing car transfers, choosing a central base (Pienza, San Quirico or Montalcino) and exploring the landscape step by step to fully enjoy the villages and their local life.
