Nanakorobi Yaoki: Nō theatre on display in L'Aquila

Opening: 16 May 2026. The exhibition, organized by the Fondazione Giorgio de Marchis Bonanni d'Ocre and part of L'Aquila Italian Capital of Culture 2026, offers a photographic and iconographic journey into Nō theatre.

The show combines photography, prints and stage artefacts to explain the ritual and performative aspects of this classical Japanese drama.

Highlights

  • 100 photographs by Fabio Massimo Fioravanti, shot over roughly 35 years: performances, temple rituals, backstage, the mirror room, actor training and mask-making.
  • 40 ukiyo-e by Tsukioka Kogyo, displayed in Italy for the first time.
  • Nō masks by artist Keiko Udaka, stage costumes and fans.

Events and talks

  • Project presentation by Prof. Giorgio Amitrano with the talk Iki, Anatomy of Seduction.
  • A shimai (short dance) performed by shite and shihan Monique Arnaud at the opening; a repeat is planned in the courtyard of Palazzo Cappa Cappelli on 23 May 2026.
  • Meeting and mask-making demonstration with Keiko Udaka on 23 May: an insight into traditional and contemporary mask production.

Why visit

The exhibition sheds light on Nō as both theatrical form and ritual practice. Photography and prints emphasize themes of transience and aesthetic restraint central to Japanese sensibility.
