A piece of Trentino in Basilicata: the Little Lucanian Dolomites

Autore: Redazione 21/08/2025 16:25

If you think that the Dolomites are only found in Trentino, you are mistaken. Basilicata also has its own. Among the most evocative peaks in the region is the Gallipoli Cognato and Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Park, whose nickname derives from the fact that these imposing sandstone peaks rising towards the sky are reminiscent of the Dolomites in Trentino.

The park covers approximately 27,000 hectares, and along the trails you can encounter beech and turkey oak trees, as well as a wide variety of wildlife such as foxes, wild boars, wildcats, and badgers. This offers a truly immersive experience in nature, as these animals can be spotted anywhere in the park.

The park is not only home to unspoiled nature, but also to villages such as Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, which are among the most beautiful villages in Italy. They are suspended between rocks and breathtaking views, and here you will find the famous Volo dell'Angelo (Angel Flight), a cable connecting the two villages, allowing you to soar through the air like a bird of prey.

These two villages are also home to numerous festivals and fairs, and in fact, it is not difficult to find archaeological remains and evidence of ancient settlements in the woods, proving that these villages have been inhabited since prehistoric times.

Gallipoli Cognato and the Piccole Dolomiti Lucane, therefore, tell the story of a hidden Basilicata, a Basilicata that combines adventure, unspoiled nature, and culture that has remained intact over the centuries. It is the perfect place for those seeking Italian tradition, and perhaps even for those chasing the clichés of the classic southern village. Trust me, it will be worth it.
