Tragicomica at MAXXI: Italian art with an ironic edge

From April 2 to September 20, 2026, MAXXI presents Tragicomica. Perspectives on Italian art from the late 20th century to today, the museum's most extensive exhibition dedicated to contemporary Italian art. Curated by Andrea Bellini and Francesco Stocchi, the show brings together over 130 artists and roughly 300 works to examine how tragic and comic elements coexist in the national visual language.

The exhibition opens with a striking linen canvas by Lucio Fontana bearing opposing inscriptions that evoke both sanctity and desecration — an ironic self-portrait that frames the show's central tension. The display avoids a strict chronological layout, favoring transversal juxtapositions that pair well-known works with lesser-known pieces to offer alternative narratives of Italian art.

An interdisciplinary project

Produced by MAXXI in collaboration with the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, Tragicomica extends its inquiry beyond visual arts to include film, theatre, literature, philosophy, design and architecture. The program features public talks and is accompanied by a catalogue published by Marsilio.
