Among fortresses and centuries-old beech forests: the Monti Aurunci Natural Park

Autore: Redazione 23/08/2025 11:35

Between the provinces of Latina and Frosinone, in the unspoiled heart of southern Lazio, lie over 19,400 hectares of mountain silence and exceptional biodiversity. We are talking about the Monti Aurunci Regional Nature Park, which includes ten municipalities: Campo di Mele, Formia, Fondi, Itri, Lenola, Spigno Saturnia, Ausonia, Esperia, Pico, and Ponte Corvo. This should already give us an idea of how immense the park is.

Petrella, Ruazzo, and Monte Sant'Angelo are the three main peaks, falling between the sea and the hills, offering breathtaking views stretching from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the islands of Ponza. If you are looking for an Instagrammable and scenic location, these three mountains in Lazio's Monte Aurunci are perfect, offering views from Circeo to Matese.

It is also rich in habitats, including beech and holm oak forests, but the flora in general offers indescribable emotions with over 1,900 plant species, including many wild orchids. All this creates an extraordinary chromatic and sensory mosaic.

As in all parks in Lazio, the Apennine wolf reigns supreme within the reserve, while the streams are home to chub and Ruscello lamprey, which are endemic Italian fish typical of the area.

But nature is not everything. Walking through these mountains also means retracing traces of history, among medieval ruins, ancient mule tracks, and abandoned monasteries. Even Urbex enthusiasts will find something to enjoy here.

The park also promotes many cultural activities, such as workshops on weaving stramma, a craft linked to the Ampelodesmos mauritanicus plant, as well as museums, visitor centers, and educational trails, such as the one leading to the Sant'Arcangelo forest.

Unique geography, surprising biodiversity, history, and nature are the reasons to visit the Monti Aurunci Park. It is an irresistible invitation, a place to be experienced slowly, where every step is a discovery and a spectacle, where the history that surrounds you teaches a sense of limits and beauty.
