History and description
Probably built as a watchtower against barbarian incursions, around it, in the 10th–11th century, a castle was erected to serve as the residence of the Counts of Potenza. Over time, it passed into the hands of the Lombards, the Angevins, the Swabians, and in 1268 to the royal castellan. Donated by Beatrice de Guevara to the Capuchins in 1621, it later became a monastery and then a hospital, before being demolished, leaving only the tower intact. Resisting centuries of urban transformations, today it houses the offices of the forestry service. The tower is about 20 meters high, built with local stone and materials, and is surrounded by a monumental public garden that enhances its beauty.
Curiosities
Thanks to its resistance to earthquakes, bombings, and the passage of time, the tower today stands as a symbol of the city’s historical memory and resilience. Inside, it hosts a museum dedicated to the agronomist Viggiani.
Access
Accessible from the outside and on its lower floors, the tower can be visited free of charge, as can the museum, with guided tours available upon reservation.
How to reach it
The tower is easily reachable by car, with nearby parking, by public transport through the many urban lines, or on foot starting from the historic center.
A symbol of the resilience of Potenza’s urban past and a witness to the passing centuries, visiting the Guevara Tower means fully immersing yourself in the history of the city!
