Cabras Lagoon and Sinis Peninsula: the wild heart of the Oristano area

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:25

For those seeking authenticity, off the beaten track, the Cabras Lagoon and the Sinis Peninsula form a unique mosaic of nature, history, and traditions in the heart of the Oristano area. In this part of western Sardinia, fresh water mixes with the sea. The Cabras Lagoon is a silent oasis swept only by the wind.

Many fishermen gather there for their catches, and the practice is still that of centuries ago. Fishermen use fassonis, which are ancient boats woven with marsh grasses, to move through the canals. Bottarga di Muggine (mullet roe) is also known as the gold of Cabras and is the most famous and sold product on the whole island. Is Arutas is the most iconic beach on the island, with sand composed of tiny quartz grains that sparkle like grains of rice in the sun. This is located within the Sinis Peninsula, which is a corner of Sardinia made up of sandy dunes and white beaches.

Another treasure is the archaeological area of Tharros, which is an ancient Punic-Roman city. The spectacle is stunning: columns, remains of thermal baths, and Roman roads intertwine, creating a timeless atmosphere. The millenary ruins clash with the wind, thus creating heavenly sounds. Within the area, there will be some Caribbean landscapes, also because of the animals found there, such as pink flamingos or herons. There is a legend revolving around the Cabras Lagoon.

It is said that the ancient inhabitants of the area believed that the lagoon was inhabited by benevolent spirits who protected the waters. This place, therefore, is everything that a lover of nature, legend, and history can admire. It is the encounter between beauty and myth. Harmony is born here.
