Valli Cupe Regional Nature Reserve: a hidden treasure in Calabria

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:16

Exploring the Presila Catanzarese, between Sersale, Zagarise, and Cerva, one can come across the Valli Cupe Regional Nature Reserve, a natural gem of Calabria, established in 2016 and managed by Legambiente. The landscape rises with spectacular canyons, breathtaking waterfalls, and trails immersed in a unique ecosystem: this “best-kept secret of Europe” is a must-visit for lovers of privacy and nature.

Located between Monte Gariglione and the Ionian Sea, the reserve boasts the Valli Cupe Canyon, one of the largest in Europe, with rock walls up to 150 meters high. The trails are suitable for families and experienced hikers alike, winding through spectacular gorges and waterfalls such as Campanaro, Inferno, and Crocchio, where visitors can bathe in natural pools carved into the rock. For photography enthusiasts, the contrasts of light and shadow stretching from the Gulf of Squillace to Capo Rizzuto provide endless opportunities.

Nature is not all: history and myth merge in one place. The Pietra del Ruvazzo monolith features 17th-century carvings linked to brigandage, and the ghost town of Marcaglione tells stories of a darker past than expected. Children can admire the “Good Giant,” a 450-year-old chestnut tree, while the paths of the Basilian monks add an extra layer of charm. The reserve is close to Marina di Capo Rizzuto, allowing visitors to combine mountain excursions with days at the beach for the perfect mix.

With trails ranging from easy (Valli Cupe Canyon, 1.3 km, difficulty T) to challenging (Cascata dell’Inferno, 600 m, difficulty EE), the reserve is home to both seasoned explorers and beginners. Guides offer tours and are available at the Sersale Tourist Information Center, and night hikes and bike tours along the Ciclovia dei Parchi are also organized. The reserve has served as a set for films and documentaries.

The Valli Cupe Regional Nature Reserve is accessible via SS106 toward Sersale, and spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit for vivid colors. Tickets (3–7 euros) and information are available at the Sersale CIT.

For those seeking a multisensory experience of nature, history, myth, icy waters, and untouched landscapes, the reserve is the perfect destination.
