Riserva Naturale Regionale delle Salse di Nirano: where the Earth bubbles

Autore: Redazione 26/09/2025 20:20

In Fiorano Modenese, hidden among the vineyards that produce the famous Lambrusco, there is a geological laboratory where the Earth has been playing at chemical experiments for thousands of years. The Salse di Nirano are mud craters that continuously gurgle, spit, and erupt a grey slurry full of smelly gas that rises from the planet's depths as if someone had left an underground geological burner switched on.

Approaching these steaming holes is an experience that makes you smile and feel impressed at the same time. The ground underfoot is unstable and soft, while the air smells of rotten eggs due to the hydrogen sulfide that rises along with methane from the hill's viscera. Every step produces strange noises: glu-glu coming from underground, wet slaps as the mud settles, and hisses of gas escaping from the cracks as if the Earth were snoring.

The clay cones come in different sizes: some are as tall as a gnome's hat, others reach the height of a person. All are in continuous movement: today there's a mud volcano half a meter tall, tomorrow it has deflated and a new one has sprouted three meters away. It's a landscape that changes every week, as if someone were continuously redesigning the terrain with a pencil made of mud and gas.

Walking on the wooden walkways that cross this natural minefield offers thrills of scientific wonder. You realize you are witnessing a phenomenon that has continued for millennia: the Earth breathing, eliminating its toxins, allowing everything that has accumulated in its deep folds to escape. It's not as spectacular as a real volcano, but it's as hypnotic as watching a giant pot boil.

The smell is intense but not unbearable: a mix of swamp, garage, and chemical lab that becomes familiar after a while. Children are fascinated by these miniature volcanoes making funny noises, while adults get lost reflecting on the mysteries of the subsurface and the geological timelines that are unthinkable for us.

The reserve organizes guided tours with geologists who explain how this subterranean mechanism works and why it forms precisely here, in the middle of the Emilia fields. Access is regulated to protect both visitors and the delicate balance of these cold volcanoes.

From Modena, it's easy to arrive by following signs for Fiorano. There is free parking and a visitor center with panels explaining the science behind this natural spectacle. Bring shoes you don't mind getting dirty and a courageous nose: here, the Earth makes itself felt with all the senses.
