At the northern tip of Lake Como something magical and unexpected happens: the towering mountains of Valchiavenna are reflected in water mirrors that look like miniature lakes scattered across a very green plain. The Pian di Spagna Reserve is this aquatic world where marsh and lake blend, creating a unique habitat that attracts thousands of birds and rewards those who take the time to stop and observe.
Walking here means moving on wooden walkways that float above immense reeds where the water gurgles softly beneath your feet. The scent is one of marsh herbs mixed with the fresh mountain air descending from the valleys: an olfactory cocktail that smells of freedom and wild nature. Every step causes wild ducks, herons, and moorhens that were hiding in the reeds to take flight.
Lake Mezzola is the forgotten little brother of the more famous Como, but perhaps for this very reason, it is more authentic and less touristy. Its dark waters reflect the snow-capped peaks all year round, creating natural postcards that change color with every hour of the day. Early in the morning, when the fog rises from the water, it feels like walking in a fairy tale world where reality and reflections merge.
Nature photographers come here from all over Lombardy because they know this place offers unrepeatable shots. Kingfishers dart electric blue over the water, swans glide elegantly among the mountain reflections, and flocks of migratory birds draw perfect geometries against the sky: every season brings different but always spectacular subjects.
The trails are easy and suitable for everyone: from families with strollers to grandparents who enjoy tranquil walks. The observation towers allow you to spy on the fauna without disturbing it, while strategically placed benches offer rest stops with a view that is worth the trip alone.
History blends with nature: these reclaimed lands were once malarial marshes, then transformed by man into rice fields, and finally returned to the wild. Today they are a biodiversity paradise where over 150 different bird species coexist.
The reserve is easily reachable from Como or Sondrio by following signs for Novate Mezzola. Free parking is available at the entrance, and visitor centers provide detailed maps and information on the best periods for bird watching. Bring binoculars, a camera, and waterproof shoes: water is the protagonist here, and a few puddles are part of the fun. Spring and autumn are the seasons richest in life, but winter also offers silences and atmospheres you won't forget.
