Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve: the wild heart of Maremma

Autore: Redazione 30/08/2025 13:26

Between Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia lies one of the most fascinating places in Tuscany. The Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve represents what remains of the ancient Lake Prile, an immense lagoon that dominated the Maremma region during the Etruscan and Roman eras.

Today, Diaccia Botrona spans over a thousand hectares and holds a mosaic of environments where water, land, and sky meet in a beautiful balance of biodiversity. The landscape changes with the seasons and still retains an archaic charm. It is, in fact, one of the most important wetlands in Italy, hosting an extraordinary ecosystem with over 200 species of birds.

The Casa Rossa Ximenes (Red Ximenes House), built in the 18th century by the engineer Leonardo Ximenes on behalf of the Lorraine family, is a symbol of the area and was used to regulate the waters of the swamp at the time. Today, it houses a multimedia museum that recounts the history and naturalistic richness of Diaccia Botrona, and many guided walking tours start here, allowing you to have the most complete experience possible.

But the appeal doesn't stop at biodiversity. The magic of Diaccia Botrona transforms the landscape into a painting with its unique light. In the distance, the Maremma hills and the profiles of the village of Castiglione della Pescaia appear, creating an experience that remains etched in the memory of those who live it. This place has resisted human transformation for centuries.

It is a corner of authentic Tuscany where the Maremma reveals itself as a beautiful surprise.
