Riserva Naturale delle Falesie di Duino (Duino Cliffs Nature Reserve): a path between rock and poetr

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:35

In the Duino Cliffs Nature Reserve, the Karst plateau literally plunges into the sea, forming imposing cliffs up to 90 meters high, sheer above the Adriatic. We are on the stretch of coast between Duino and Sistiana, in the province of Trieste, where one of the most surprising naturalistic gems of Friuli-Venezia Giulia is hidden.

The Rilke Trail winds through the spectacular landscape of the reserve, a path dedicated to the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who found inspiration in these very places during his stay at Duino Castle. Walking along these trails means immersing yourself in a dimension suspended between nature and literature, with benches along the route where you can contemplate the silence, in addition to World War II military fortifications that break the atmosphere. The vegetation grows lushly and resists the wind. The fauna is discreet, but some rare reptiles can be found that only the luckiest will have the honor of seeing. The cliffs are the result of ancient marine erosion that has shaped this stretch of coast for millennia, and right below them is one of the deepest submerged sea caves in the Adriatic, visited by expert divers.

The path is easy, well-maintained, and also suitable for families. And at the end of the route, you can also visit the beautiful Duino Castle, which overlooks the sea directly from the cliff. If you want to swim, there are also the beaches of Sistiana. This mix, between mountain and sea, makes the Duino reserve a unique experience.
