Val Rosandra Nature Reserve: a canyon steeped in history and nature

Autore: Redazione 22/08/2025 20:50

A few kilometers from Trieste, there is a place that surprises everyone who visits it. A real canyon, carved out by the Rosandra River, which originates in Slovenia and crosses the valley, creating a unique environment and shaping waterfalls, rapids, and pools.

Here, over thousands of years, nature has carved something that still manages to surprise. This is the Val Rosandra nature reserve. Val Rosandra is a concentration of wild nature, where you can discover the remains of ancient mills, evidence of the relationship that local communities have had for centuries with the reserve and the river.

But in addition to these historical testimonies, there is also a much more important one, such as the presence of the ancient Via Flavia, the Roman road connecting Trieste to Istria, which was traveled by merchants, travelers, and soldiers. Who knows how many heroes have traveled this road, which can now be visited by anyone.

In the scenic heart of the reserve is the Rosandra waterfall, around which the slopes are home to a rich variety of pines, oaks, cornel trees, and many species of flora typical of the Karst. The white rocks create a spectacular contrast with the green of the woods, and small amphibians and insects find refuge in the humid environments.

This reserve is also loved by climbers, and in fact, in addition to them, trekking enthusiasts also visit Val Rosandra and consider it a true paradise. The gentler stretches offer spectacular views of the valley, while the more challenging ones are a real challenge for anyone who goes there looking for a fascinating natural gym.

However, Val Rosandra is not only about nature and adventure, but also a place of great value and tradition for the inhabitants of Trieste. In fact, it is from here that the city opens up between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, making it a cultural hub and an important crossroads for Trieste's culture.
