Isonzo River Mouth Nature Reserve: the final stretch of a history-making river

Autore: Redazione 21/09/2025 16:06

The Isonzo River reaches the sea tired but heavy with stories. After crossing Slovenia and Friuli, this river, which marked dramatic pages of the First World War, finds peace in the salt marshes of Isola della Cona, creating a natural eden where history blends with the purest biodiversity.

Walking the paths of this reserve means moving across territory reclaimed in the 1950s that nature has completely re-conquered. What were once cultivated fields is now a mosaic of environments where stretches of water, flooded meadows, riparian forests, and those expanses of reeds that sway in the wind like green seas alternate.

The Camargue horses are the most photogenic inhabitants of the area. These resilient equines live in a semi-wild state and have perfectly adapted to the marshy environment. Seeing them gallop freely through the pools of water with their manes in the wind is a spectacle you don't expect just a stone's throw from the Slovenian border. They aren't shy: they often approach visitors curiously, especially if you have an apple in your pocket.

The twenty-meter-high observation tower offers 360-degree views over the entire marsh environment. From up there, you understand how vast this aquatic world is and how many different birds inhabit it. Flat-billed spoonbills, pink-legged black-winged stilts, nervous garganeys swimming among the water lilies: every season brings different species that stop here during their journeys between Africa and Europe.

The visitor center is built like a modern Noah's Ark and houses aquariums with the local fish fauna: sturgeons, carp, tench, and those tiny gudgeons that are fundamental to the reserve's food chain. The educational paths explain how this complex ecosystem works where fresh and salt water meet, creating unique conditions.

The quiet here is absolute, broken only by the metallic sound of frogs croaking hidden among the reeds and the whistle of the wind bending the marsh grasses. It's a place where time seems to have stood still, perfect for those seeking peace but unwilling to give up discovering new things.

The reserve is located in Staranzano, a few kilometers from Gorizia. Access is free, and the paths are suitable even for families with young children. The best times are spring and autumn when migratory birds transform every corner into a natural spectacle. Bring binoculars and a camera: between wild horses, rare birds, and sunsets that set the marshes on fire, opportunities for memorable shots are never lacking.
