F-86K Restoration Campaign: Historic Jet to Be Displayed at Base Tuono

Autore: Redazione 11/03/2026 21:55

F-86K restoration and the Base Tuono project

A fundraising campaign has launched to restore a historic interceptor, the North American F-86K Sabre, for permanent display at the museum on Base Tuono on the Folgaria plateau. The effort is led by the Associazione Arma Aeronautica of Rovereto together with the museum curator and restoration specialists.

Funding target and planned work

The project needs about €15,000 to proceed. Early donations were recorded soon after the appeal began. Restoration will focus primarily on the aircraft's wings and fuselage to return it to exhibition condition after more than 70 years.

Origins and historical significance

The F-86K was developed in the early 1950s for NATO air forces. Some units were assembled under license in Italy by Fiat; the example earmarked for Base Tuono was built in the United States, initially served with the Dutch air force and later flew with Italian units. It spent years in private hands before being donated to the museum.

Schedule and display plan

The jet was moved to Trentino and restoration work has been scheduled with the help of the Gruppo Amici Velivoli Storici. Organizers aim to open the exhibit between late May and early June, which would make Base Tuono one of a small number of Italian museums to exhibit this model.

Museum value and public interest

The arrival of the F-86K will complement the site's existing Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, enriching the museum's Cold War era aviation collection. Beyond its display value, the aircraft serves as a tangible witness to Cold War defensive systems and technological history.

Other places in Italy with an F-86K

Only a handful of Italian museums preserve an F-86K, including:

  • Museo Storico dell'Aeronautica Militare (near Rome)
  • Volandia - Parco e Museo del Volo (near Malpensa)
  • Museo storico Piana delle Orme

How to help: individuals interested in supporting the restoration should contact the promoting association or the museum to learn donation options. Community support is crucial to preserve and display this piece of aviation history.
