Sustainable Development Festival in Pompeii: 20–21 May 2026

When: 20 and 21 May 2026 | Where: Pompeii Archaeological Park (Parvula Domus area and experimental fields outside the walls)

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii hosts two days of events as part of the tenth edition of the Sustainable Development Festival, showcasing sustainable farming practices, educational activities and forums involving institutions, schools and local organizations.

  • 20 May (10:00–13:00) – Thematic event at the Parvula Domus, the first cultural and social farm located within a UNESCO site. The programme includes a roundtable on social and environmental sustainability, followed by hands-on workshops in backyard farming, educational beekeeping and outdoor creative and motor skills labs.
  • 21 May (10:00–13:00) – Guided visit to the experimental fields outside the archaeological walls with experts from CREA. Students from the “M.P. Vitruvio” High School (Agriculture course) will take part in practical sessions and learn about the ongoing research projects.

The Park's trials focus on recovering ancient local crops adapted to the Vesuvius area's microclimate: initial crops under study include spelt, fennel, chickpeas, onion and squash. The research aims to select resilient varieties capable of tackling climate change challenges while respecting the archaeological landscape.

The initiative is organized in collaboration with CREA and targets schools, associations and stakeholders interested in applied research and training. Activities combine theoretical discussions with experiential pathways designed to strengthen the connection between community, research and UNESCO heritage management.
