Pompeii, May 20-21: “Sustainable Meeting” with students

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii is hosting two events focused on sustainability and experimental agriculture, aimed primarily at high school students. The initiative is part of the Festival of Sustainable Development and combines research activities, experiential education and local dialogue.

When and where

• May 20, 2026, 10:00–13:00 — Parvula Domus, green ring of the Archaeological Park (thematic event with roundtable and workshops).
• May 21, 2026, 10:00–13:00 — visits to experimental fields outside the archaeological walls, accompanied by CREA experts.

Participants

Classes from local schools are involved, including students from the Istituto Superiore “M.P. Vitruvio” (Agriculture track) and other high schools engaged in ecological and digital transition programs.

Planned activities

• Guided tours of experimental crops to observe projects aimed at recovering ancient local varieties suited to the Vesuvian microclimate.
• Workshops on school gardening and educational beekeeping, creative labs and outdoor physical activities.
• Roundtable discussions among local stakeholders to address territorial networks, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

Research goals

The experiments focus on restoring and cultivating historical local varieties — such as spelt, fennel, chickpeas, onion and pumpkin — using eco-friendly practices. The aim is to identify resilient varieties capable of facing climate change while enhancing the link between landscape, agricultural heritage and the UNESCO site.
