Castrum Novum reopens in Santa Severa: guided tours and educational activities

The archaeological area of Castrum Novum in Santa Severa is open to the public again following a series of volunteer interventions by the Gruppo Archeologico del Territorio Cerite (GATC). The works have improved site safety and allowed the restart of public visits and educational activities.

Works carried out

  • Removal of winter coverings and cleaning of exposed areas to reveal excavation fronts.
  • Cutting back vegetation along paths and slopes to improve visibility and access.
  • Reorganization of access routes to increase visitor safety.
  • Support for research activities to allow excavations and archaeological investigations to continue.

Education and partnerships

The complex has resumed its role as an educational site: school visits and cultural exchanges have restarted, including activities with students from the "Vignacce" school of Santa Marinella and a group of Spanish students. Initiatives are carried out in collaboration with the Civic Museum Hub (Polo Museale Civico) to enhance accessibility and promotion of the site.

Guided tours and schedule

  • Weekly tours: every Sunday, guided tour at 10:30.
  • Special appointments: Saturday, 20 June 2026 and Saturday, 27 June 2026, at 16:00.
  • Price: €8.00 (includes guided tour and entry to the site's museums).

Practical information

For information and bookings contact the Civic Museum Hub ticket office at 392.3025990. The visitable complex includes the Museum of the Sea and Ancient Navigation, the Castle Museum, the Early Christian Church, the Village and the Fortress.
