Piuro and the Alps tell their story: archaeology and mountain in Sondrio

The Interreg Archaeo ALPS project presents its first research results in a public event that connects archaeological work with Alpine territories. The initiative aims to make archaeological discoveries accessible and usable for cultural and tourism development.

Participants

  • Province of Sondrio (lead partner)
  • Municipality of Piuro and the Italo‑Swiss Association for Piuro excavations
  • University of Verona and University of Bergamo
  • Politecnico di Milano Foundation and the Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape
  • Swiss partners: Cantons of Graubünden and Ticino, Moesa and Bregaglia regions, Graubünden Archaeological Service, SUPSI and RSI
  • Funded and coordinated within the European Interreg framework

Public program

On Thursday 19 March 2026 in Sondrio there are two public appointments:

  • 14:30 – Scientific conference at the Council Hall of Palazzo Muzio: researchers will share initial findings on excavations, fortifications and the relationship between Alpine environment and historical landscapes.
  • 17:00 – Opening of the exhibition Archaeology and Mountain at MVSA – Valtellinese Museum of History and Art: informative panels showcasing discoveries and excavation work, with a focus on Piuro.

Aims and local impact

Archaeo ALPS fosters a cross‑border research network connecting academia, public authorities and cultural institutions to enhance Alpine archaeological heritage. The travelling exhibition aims to bring scientific results to wider audiences, supporting cultural outreach, heritage tourism and local development initiatives.

Who should attend

The events are open to residents, cultural professionals and visitors keen to explore the historical roots of the Alps. Learning about recent archaeological work helps contextualize the present and supports future cultural strategies for the region.
