Earth Pyramids of Renon: fragile sculptures on the high plateau

Autore: Redazione 30/09/2025 20:34

It looks like a lunar landscape transplanted into the heart of the Dolomites. The Earth Pyramids of Renon (Piramidi di Terra del Renon) stand like impossible spires, fragile towers of clay and sand that defy gravity with miraculous balance. On the summit of each, an erratic boulder acts as a protective cap, like a stone giant watching over clay columns up to thirty meters high—the tallest and most perfect in Europe.

The visual impact is unsettling and hypnotic. These pinnacles, colored ochre, pale pink, and ash gray, resemble Gothic cathedrals eroded by time, or perhaps organs of forgotten churches emerging from the earth of the plateau. Some are slender and tall, almost trembling in the rarefied air; others are squat and massive, like sentinels of a petrified army. The boulders at the top—granites smoothed by glaciers, carried here during the Ice Ages—contrast dramatically with the fragility of the columns, creating a play of weight and lightness that seems to challenge all physical laws.

Walking among these natural sculptures is a surreal experience. The trail winds between the spires, allowing you to observe them from every angle. The surface of the pyramids is vertically striated, furrowed by trickles left by the rain that continues its slow work of erosion. Touching the compact clay reveals a rough, cold texture, surprisingly solid yet so vulnerable. The smell is that of ancient mineral earth, a dry and ferrous scent that rises from the ground, mixing with the fresh mountain air scented with fir trees and resin.

The light here continually plays with the colors: at dawn, the pyramids are tinged with antique rose, at sunset they explode into orange and golden hues, while on cloudy days they take on a ghostly gray appearance that makes them seem even more alien. In the background, the snow-capped Dolomites complete a picture of unsettling beauty, a perfect contrast between the eternal solidity of the mountains and the ephemeral fragility of these clay towers.

There is something deeply poetic in observing these forms destined to disappear. Every rain erodes a little, every frost crumbles a fragment. They are temporary monuments, beauty that transforms as you watch it.

How to Get There

  • Access: From Bolzano, ascend to Renon (Ritten) via the cable car or the Colle road.
  • Location: The pyramids are located near Longomoso (Lengmoos) and Soprabolzano (Oberbozen).
  • Trails: Trails are well-marked, easy, and suitable for everyone.
  • Best Time: Spectacular year-round, but magical at sunset.
