Sciliar-Catinaccio Park: where the mountains wear pink at dawn

Autore: Redazione 28/09/2025 10:49

In the magical lands of South Tyrol, where ancient Ladin legends materialize every morning and evening in chromatic spectacles that paralyze the soul, stretches one of the grandest natural theaters of the Dolomites: the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park (Schlern-Rosengarten). Here, where the Sciliar Massif rises like a giant stone bench and the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) towers light up with a blazing pink in the phenomenon known as Enrosadira, every breath smells of alpine freedom and every gaze embraces infinite horizons.

A Journey to the Heart of the Dolomites

The main access to this vertical paradise starts from the A22 Brennero motorway, exiting at Bolzano Nord/Bozen Nord. From there, the SS12 leads through the Val d'Ega (Eggental) up to Ponte Nova/Deutschnofen, then ascends towards Obereggen or Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen. Those preferring the western approach can follow the SS242 from Bolzano towards Siusi/Seis, the gateway to the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), also reachable by the panoramic cable car that departs from Siusi village (€12 round-trip).

The Alpe di Siusi: A Green Ocean in the Sky

Ascending to the Alpe di Siusi via the cable car is already a heart-capturing experience. As you gain altitude, the valley below transforms into a green mosaic dotted with traditional Masi (farmhouses) and Gothic bell towers, while the air becomes cool and crystalline, laden with the sweet scent of alpine flowers carpeting the boundless meadows of this plateau of wonders.

Walking the gentle paths across the Alpe di Siusi is like floating on a green ocean at $2,000\text{ meters}$ of altitude. The undulating prairies stretch for kilometers, interrupted only by gurgling streams and wooden huts where the smell of freshly baked bread mixes with that of freshly cut hay. During the summer, this natural carpet transforms into a floral kaleidoscope: blue gentians, pink rhododendrons, and white edelweiss create chromatic compositions that seem painted by a divine hand.

The Magic of the Enrosadira

The phenomenon of the Enrosadira transforms this landscape into a cosmic spectacle daily. At dawn and sunset, when the first or last rays of the sun strike the Dolomite walls of the Catinaccio, the calcareous rock literally ignites with a shocking pink that shifts to flaming orange, then to fire red, creating an inferno of colors that takes your breath away and makes your heart beat fast.

The cozy alpine refuges scattered across this dreamlike plateau—such as the Rifugio Bolzano (Schlernhaus) or the Baita Panorama—offer restorative stops where steaming Canederli (dumplings) and apple strudel refresh the body while the soul feeds on impossible views that sweep from the spires of the Odle to the peaks of the Ortles, making every moment in this Dolomite sanctuary a precious gift that remains forever imprinted in memory.
