Appian Way Regional Park: where Rome breathes between history and nature

Autore: Redazione 24/09/2025 20:31

Escaping Roman traffic without leaving the city seems impossible, yet you only need to cycle for twenty minutes from the center to find yourself in a completely different world. The Appian Way Park is the Romans' best-kept secret: 4,500 hectares of greenery where millenary ruins blend with immense meadows and where you can run, walk, or cycle while breathing clean air a stone's throw from the Colosseum.

The Appian Way (Via Appia) is the common thread throughout: this road, built in 312 B.C., is still there, with its original cobblestones that make bike wheels dance and tell two thousand years of history underfoot. Walking on these worn basoli (cobblestones) literally means following in the footsteps of Roman legionaries, medieval pilgrims, and travelers of every era. The umbrella pines create a green dome above the road, filtering the light into golden rays that transform every walk into a movie set.

The Park of the Aqueducts (Parco degli Acquedotti) is probably the most Instagrammed place in the whole area: the Roman arches follow one another endlessly, creating breathtaking geometric perspectives. Modern Romans come here to jog at dawn, when the low-lying light transforms every arch into a golden frame. The meadows around the aqueducts are perfect for Sunday picnics, impromptu soccer games, or simply lying on the grass to read a book with a view that is unparalleled in the world.

The Caffarella Valley (Valle della Caffarella) is the wild side of the park: here, Maremmana sheep and cows graze peacefully among the ruins of Roman villas, creating a surreal contrast between contemporary life and antiquity. The Almone River flows slowly between reeds and willows, while herons and moorhens move undisturbed along the banks. It is a corner of authentic Roman countryside that resists modernity.

Getting around the park is easy and fun. There are well-marked bike paths, trekking trails of every difficulty, and even routes for horses. Roman bike-sharing systems reach the park's entrance, or you can rent a bike directly on site. Families with children find safe spaces where the little ones can run free, while athletes have kilometers of trails to train surrounded by greenery.

On weekends, the park fills up with real Roman life: grandparents doing gymnastics under the pines, families organizing barbecues in the equipped areas, groups of friends playing frisbee among the aqueducts. It is the place where Rome reconciles with itself, where the daily frenzy gives way to more human rhythms.

The park is always open, and admission is completely free. It is easily reachable by Metro B (Circo Massimo stop) or with several buses. Bring comfortable shoes, a water bottle, and a camera: here, every corner unites natural beauty and historical grandeur in a mix that exists only in Rome.
