Casentinesi Forests National Park: ancient nature between spirituality and deep silence

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:33

In Central Italy, one of the wildest places in Italy is hidden: the Casentinesi Forests National Park. It is located between Tuscany and Romagna, and the Tuscan part extends into the province of Arezzo. It is a stage of woods and spirituality, and nature still preserves its most authentic voice. The forest dominates everything, with the intertwined canopies of the trees creating shady paths.

The trails lead to hermitages, waterfalls, and panoramic views, and they are well-marked along the entire stretch. The Sanctuary of La Verna is one of the symbolic places of the Casentinesi Forests National Park, and it is surrounded by a very dense forest. This is a gathering place for Franciscan pilgrims, as Saint Francis received the stigmata here, and even today the place transmits a deep sense of peace and spirituality. Camaldoli is another unmissable spot, and it also preserves an ancient hermitage and a monastery that are still active today. Here too, spirituality merges with the breathtaking landscape it offers. In this park there is not only green but also plenty of water.

The Acquacheta waterfalls slide between the rocks and offer a marvelous spectacle. Even Dante was captivated by them and wrote about them in the Divine Comedy. They are located within the Foresta della Lama, which is one of the most intact forests in Europe. This is not just a destination for hikers, but also for nature enthusiasts or families who want a different kind of day trip.

It is, in fact, very relaxing to walk the less complex trails. Visiting the Casentinesi Forests Park means immersing yourself in a Tuscany that still moves at the pace of calmer people, who seek a regenerating climate far from the noise of the city.
