There is an island where time has stood still, where white, ghost-like creatures roam free on barren plains battered by the Mistral wind, and where history mixes with myth, creating a magnetic and irresistible atmosphere: Asinara Island. This strip of wild Sardinia, torn from the sea by primordial geological forces, guards secrets that only the salty winds of the North-West truly know.
The approach by sea is already an emotional ritual. Authorized ferries depart from the port of Porto Torres every morning (mandatory booking via the park website), while tourist boats from Stintino offer daily excursions that include transport and a nature guide. The forty-minute journey across the Gulf of Asinara offers glimpses of the island's jagged coastline, where reddish cliffs alternate with hidden coves of dazzling beauty.
Disembarking at Fornelli means entering a suspended dimension. The structures of the old penal colony, now visitor reception centers, tell stories of confinement and redemption that still echo between the sun-faded stone walls. The absolute silence that envelops the island is broken only by the sudden braying of the famous white donkeys that appear abruptly among the juniper and myrtle bushes, like ethereal apparitions from a Mediterranean dream.
Traveling along the single dirt road that crosses the island aboard the park's ecological trains means immersing oneself in a lunar landscape where granite rocks stand like natural sculptures against the deep blue of the sea. The pungent aroma of the endemic scrub—cistus, wild lavender, giant rosemary—mixes with the iodized scent rising from the crystalline waters of the most remote bays.
Asinara's beaches are pristine paradises where the blinding white of the sand merges with turquoise shades that change intensity with the dancing light. Cala d'Arena and Cala Sabina offer unforgettable swims in waters so transparent they look like liquid mirrors where colorful fish dart curiously among swaying Posidonia seagrass.
The Maritime Station of Porto Torres is only 15 km from the center of Sassari (ARST bus every hour). Alghero airport is a 45-minute drive away, while the scenic route from Olbia along the SS131 takes about two hours. This natural fortress, shaped by centuries of isolation, continues to seduce travelers in search of wild authenticity and primordial beauty.
