Pollino National Park: the giant of Italy where Basilicata touches the sky

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:13

If Basilicata had a green heart, it would surely beat inside the Pollino National Park. It’s the largest natural park in Italy — a place where silence and legend blend together in a breathtaking atmosphere. Ancient rivers have carved deep canyons, while towering peaks rise above 2,200 meters, creating a landscape that feels both wild and sacred.

The Pollino spans two regions — Basilicata and Calabria — connecting the provinces of Potenza, Matera, and Cosenza. The park’s symbol is the Bosnian Pine (Pino Loricato), a fossil-like tree with an armored, scaly bark. You’ll encounter these majestic sentinels as you climb Mount Pollino, Dolcedorme, or Monte Serra delle Ciavole — like ancient warriors standing guard over the mountains.

Pollino has something for everyone: from trekking and winter snowshoeing to cave exploration and canyoning through the Raganello Gorges, adventure seekers will find their paradise here. It’s also home to the rare Italian deer, as well as wolves, eagles, and many other wild species.

The human side of the park is just as rich. Villages like Rotonda, Viggianello, and San Severino Lucano preserve pastoral traditions and serve authentic, hearty food (don’t miss the ferretti pasta with peperone crusco — the famous crunchy pepper!). In these towns, people still speak Arbëreshë, an Albanian dialect brought here by refugees in the 15th century, and travelers are welcomed as part of the family.

Getting here by car is easy: from Basilicata, you can enter through Rotonda, Terranova del Pollino, or Francavilla in Sinni, following the SS653 (Sinnica) from Lauria or the SS92 from Potenza.

By train, the nearest station is Lauria Sud, but you’ll need to continue by bus or car. The park is also accessible on foot or by bike for the more adventurous, with marked trails maintained by the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) and local guides.
