Matese National Park: the authentic mountain between Molise and Campania

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:02

April 22, 2025, is a historic date for Molise. On that day, the Matese National Park was officially established, a natural treasure chest that extends over 87,000 hectares between Molise and Campania. The natural beauty in this park is enviable, with peaks over 2,000 meters and a mosaic of landscapes that create a breathtaking environment.

At the center of the park lies Campitello Matese, which was once a summer refuge for shepherds, while now it is ideal for winter sports. In fact, 40 km of ski slopes, modern chairlifts, a snowpark, and a groomed valley floor for cross-country skiing have been established. It is located at an altitude of 1,450 meters and is also perfect for excursions or for those who want to go mountain biking. For those who love kayaking, it is possible to paddle in Lake Matese, one of the highest karst lakes in Italy. Monte Miletto, La Gallinola, and Monte Mutria are the true symbols of the Matese. From there, if you look out, you can see the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian Seas simultaneously, a perfect place to contemplate nature. The karst plateau not far away hosts, as mentioned, Lake Matese, immersed among mountains and woods.

If you want to take a journey through villages, the CAI Sentiero d'Italia (Italy Path), for trekking lovers, is ideal. It spans several kilometers and touches many villages. The Piana delle Pesche (Plain of the Peaches) is a plateau ideal for picnics immersed in nature. The Cipresseta di Fontegreca is a forest where centuries-old cypresses grow. The Forre di Lavello, on the other hand, are deep gorges carved by water.

There are also many animal species that can be found. Watch out for the Apennine wolf and the wildcat. This is their territory, and this hierarchy must be respected. The Pozzo della Neve (Snow Well) and the Cul di Bove are among the deepest abysses in Europe. In fact, be careful: visiting them requires caving expertise.

The Matese National Park is therefore perfect for those seeking sustainable tourism. The local community and villages offer many different experience opportunities, including culinary ones. Visiting the Matese means immersing yourself in a nature where the contemplation of it can lead to inner peace.
