Gargano National Park - the Apulian wonder

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:31

Those who only know the Gargano for its sunny beaches, for Vieste or Peschici, or for the pilgrimages to San Giovanni Rotondo, have probably never truly walked in its woods, nor breathed the scent of resin in the Aleppo pine forests, nor listened to the millennial silence of the Umbra Forest. Yet, this corner of Puglia that juts out into the Adriatic like a green spur, preserves one of the richest and most varied naturalistic, cultural, and gastronomic heritage sites in the Mediterranean.

Far from the routes of mass tourism, the Gargano National Park reveals itself in its most authentic form: that of a geological and biological microcosm, marked by an insular origin that has left a deep imprint on its biodiversity. The Gargano is mountain, forest, coast, and plateau: a natural mosaic that encloses extremely diverse habitats within a few square kilometers.

From Monte Calvo, which barely touches 1,065 meters, the gaze sweeps as far as the coastal lagoons of Lesina and Varano. The Umbra Forest – the green and shady heart of the park – is a true monument of nature, with its beech forests pushing down to surprisingly low altitudes and a vegetation that recalls the Balkan forests. It is no coincidence that scholars and botanists consider this promontory a bridgehead between Western and Eastern Europe, a kind of green reliquary that has been able to preserve intact patches of prehistoric plant landscape.

Trails, stories, and silences Those who wish to discover the authentic Gargano cannot help but travel at least a section of the Grande Traversata Garganica (GTG): an itinerary of about 200 km, traversable on foot, by bike, or on horseback, which connects the most internal areas with the coast, passing through karst valleys, dense forests, and villages that seem suspended in time. Stops like Monte Spigno, the Umbra Forest, Vico del Gargano, or Carpino reveal themselves as treasure chests of memory and beauty, best crossed in silence to create contact with the naturalistic landscape.

Not only the above-mentioned routes, but the network of ancient paths of faith also lives on in the Gargano Park: from the Via Sacra dei Longobardi, traveled over the centuries by pilgrims heading to the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo in Monte Sant’Angelo, up to the 40 km Vieste path, which recalls the popular pilgrimages of the past. Today many of these itineraries are equipped and marked, but they still retain the mystical aura and ruggedness of their origins.

Gargano to taste However, it is not only nature that tells the story of the Gargano. Its cuisine also does, rooted in transhumance, seasonality, and the culture of peasant sobriety. In this land, where goats climb rocky walls to graze on thistles and hollies, local products speak the language of resilience and taste.

An example is the muscisca, dried and spiced goat meat, derived from a pastoral tradition that dates back centuries. Or the farrata of Manfredonia, a rustic savory pie filled with spelt, sheep's ricotta, and aromatic herbs, still prepared today according to ancient rituals. And then the poperati, sweet spiced taralli of Albanian origin, a symbol of a mixed and layered cultural heritage.

Fresh pastaorecchiette, troccoli, cavatelli – are another emblem of female knowledge and handed-down manual skill. Walking through historic centers like Monte Sant’Angelo, it is not uncommon to come across women who, sitting outside their homes, shape small masterpieces to be seasoned with goat sauces or with cacioricotta cheese produced with the milk of the Garganica goat, a rustic and resistant breed, today a Slow Food Presidium.

Resisting traditions Among the most fascinating practices rediscovered in recent years is the weaving of the Cruedda, a container made of straw and fabric, a symbol of female life in Ischitella. Each family had its own pattern, each weave told a story. Reborn as a typical production of the park, the cruedda is today also an object of art and collective identity.

And then there are the ostie ripiene (stuffed hosts) of Monte Sant’Angelo, born – it is said – by chance in a convent, and which have become one of the most emblematic desserts of the area, a perfect union between the sacred and the profane.

A heritage to be preserved The Gargano National Park is not just a protected area, but a complex ecosystem in which nature, culture, history, faith, and gastronomy coexist. Today's challenge is to protect its biodiversity without distorting its soul, promote sustainable tourism that knows how to enhance and not consume, and introduce visitors to a land that is not quickly conquered, but which reveals itself to those who know how to look, listen, and taste.
