Monti Sibillini National Park: the Apennines between myth, blossoms, and infinite horizons

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:43

The Monti Sibillini National Park is a territory of extraordinary beauty, where every mountain tells a different legend. It is located between Umbria and Marche and extends for over 71,400 hectares, reaching heights greater than 2,400 meters. The heart of the Sibillini is the Piani di Castelluccio plateau, where the famous fioritura (blossoming) takes place, which is a mosaic of red poppies, blue cornflowers, white daisies, and lentils, thus creating a real palette of colors, ready to marvel the gaze of anyone who sets eyes on it.

It is an event that also involves non-experts; in fact, there is a large trail of about 4 km that offers breathtaking views. Monte Vettore, which overlooks the mythical Lake Pilato, also offers marvelous views. According to an ancient legend, the lake guards the body of Pontius Pilate, who was transported here by a cart pulled by buffaloes. This, obviously, adds a touch of charm, also because of the legend surrounding it. The Gola dell’Infernaccio (Hell's Gorge) is one of the most evocative, and the trails lead to views that leave you breathless. The Sentiero delle Fate (Path of the Fairies), on the other hand, is a natural path in the rock, created by fairies fleeing at the break of dawn. So goes the legend that revolves around this path.

The routes, such as the Grande Anello dei Sibillini (Great Sibilline Ring), which is a multi-day itinerary, are perfect for those who want to fully enjoy all the nuances of the park. Just think: the Castelluccio plateau is divided into Pian Grande, Pian Piccolo, and Pian Perduto, and is the result of an ancient dried-up lake.

Furthermore, on some weekends in June and July, car access is limited because there is a desire to protect the site during the blossoming. The Monti Sibillini National Park is, therefore, the perfect place to go if you are looking for a place to immerse yourself in the most authentic nature of the Italian peninsula. It is the place where sky and earth meet, forming a true paradise.
