Parco dei Mostri di Bomarzo (Park of the Monsters of Bomarzo): the strangest garden in Italy

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:37

The Park of the Monsters of Bomarzo is not a simple garden, but one of the most mysterious and fascinating places in Italy. Located in the heart of Tuscia, and created in the 16th century by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, the Park of the Monsters of Bomarzo is a real wood inhabited by fantastic creatures, colossal statues, and surreal constructions.

Walking through the park, you will encounter mysterious sculptures rich in symbolism: sphinxes, ogres with wide-open mouths, fighting dragons, giant turtles, a leaning house, and monsters carved into the stone. Some are scary: imagine visiting it at night! The Park of the Monsters was also visited by Salvador Dalí, who, in the 1950s, was struck by the park's peculiarity, and many other writers, directors, and musicians have also been captivated by what is one of the most original examples of out-of-the-box art, an anticipation of Surrealism in the heart of the Renaissance. Every corner seems to come out of a dream, a fairy tale, or perhaps almost a nightmare.

An unusual atmosphere permeates the place, but it is perfect for families with curious children, and for anyone who wants to take truly unique photos that will remain in albums for years. The most entertaining attractions are the leaning house, which is genuinely tilted: entering it will truly make you lose your balance. On the ogre, the inscription reads "every thought flies." It is unknown why Prince Pier Francesco Orsini commissioned the statues: their original meaning is still a subject of debate today. If you want to experience a little folly in the center of Italy, then this place, which mixes art, nature, and mystery, is certainly unique.
