Palazzo Maffei House Museum (Verona): history, collection and practical

Autore: Redazione 19/04/2026 14:36

Where it is

Palazzo Maffei overlooks Piazza delle Erbe in the historic center of Verona. Its central location makes the house museum easy to include in a walking itinerary alongside attractions such as the Torre dei Lamberti and the Arche Scaligere.

History and opening

The building, erected in the 17th century for the Maffei family, is a notable example of Baroque architecture in Verona. After various transformations over the centuries, it opened to the public as a House Museum on 14 February 2020, to display the private collection assembled by entrepreneur and collector Luigi Carlon.

Architecture and interiors

The ornate façade and frescoed interiors define the palace: statues evoking classical deities, decorative window frames and a central balcony that structures the composition. Interior spaces, spread across multiple levels, retain original decorative traces that interact with the museum displays.

Exhibition route and main works

The route is organised to provide a chronological and thematic reading, ranging from antiquity to contemporary art. Highlights of the collection include:

  • Cleopatra attributed to Domenico Brusasorzi;
  • Christ in Limbo by Paolo Farinati;
  • Triptych by the Master of San Zeno and other medieval and Renaissance works;
  • sections devoted to modern art, historical furnishings and international contemporary works.

Informative materials and the layout of the rooms support a clear visit, helping visitors understand the relationship between the artworks and their architectural setting.

Visiting the museum: practical information

Palazzo Maffei suits both visitors seeking an in-depth cultural experience and those fitting a stop into a broader center-of-Verona walk. For opening times and ticketing, details can change due to temporary exhibitions or seasons: check the museum’s official channels before your visit for up-to-date information on opening hours, bookings and concessions.

Tips: combine the visit with a walking route through Piazza delle Erbe and nearby monuments; allow at least 1–2 hours to explore the exhibition rooms if you wish to study individual works.
