Pablo Atchugarry – Sculpting the Light

Where: Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Rome

When: 19 May - 21 June 2026

The National Gallery stages a comprehensive retrospective of Pablo Atchugarry, showcasing more than fifty-five sculptures that span the artist’s work of the last three decades. Curated by Gabriele Simongini, the exhibition features both outdoor installations and gallery pieces, highlighting recurring themes in Atchugarry’s practice.

  • Materials on display: primarily marble (including Carrara statuario), plus alabaster, steel, bronze and wood.
  • Works: over 50 sculptures placed inside and outside the museum.
  • Monumental pieces on the steps: "Search of the Future" (2018), "Viaje hacia los sueños" (2024) and "Albero della vita" (2024).
  • Museum acquisition: the artist donated a new white marble work titled "Splendore" to the GNAMC collection.

Atchugarry personally carves marble following the "force of taking away" tradition, emphasizing the hand and the direct confrontation with technical and material challenges. The exhibition underlines the interplay of light and matter, offering visitors a contemplative route that resonates with twentieth-century sculptural masters.

Why visit: this show is essential for those interested in contemporary sculpture that revisits classical heritage through a spiritual and material language, presented in a clear and broad retrospective.
