In the secret realm of the Walser: Mont Mars, where giants sleep among mirrors of sky

Autore: Redazione 28/09/2025 13:30

A world exists above the clouds where Monte Rosa reigns supreme like an emperor of rock and ice, and at its feet hides one of the best-kept secrets of the Alps: the Mont Mars Nature Reserve. Here, far from the crowds besieging the more famous peaks, the mountain reveals its most intimate and wild face.

The trail climbing from Fontainemore scrambles through forests of golden larches that ignite like living torches in autumn, while the crackling of dry branches underfoot marks the rhythm of an ascent that is pure enchantment. The air gradually becomes more rarefied and crystalline, bringing with it the pungent odor of moss and the resinous fragrance that only high altitude can offer.

At every turn of the path, alpine lakes of an impossible blue appear like jewels set among rocks smoothed by glaciers. They are perfect mirrors that reflect infinite skies and sharp peaks, where the silence is so deep you can hear your own heartbeat mixing with the subtle gurgling of invisible streams born from the heart of the glaciers.

The mysterious peat bogs guard ancient secrets: tiny carnivorous plants and rare orchids grow here, challenging the altitude with their fragile beauty. Curious marmots observe visitors from a safe distance, while golden eagles draw circles in the blue sky, undisputed masters of this vertical kingdom.

The Walser culture still lives in these places through stone huts that seem to grow directly from the rock, silent witnesses to a civilization that knew how to live in harmony with the harshest mountain environment. The icy wind descending from the glittering seracs carries stories of brave shepherds and endless winters, while the high-altitude sun warms the face with an intensity that gently burns the skin.

When the evening paints the peaks with rose and gold, this natural sanctuary transforms into a cathedral of light where every reflection on the lakes seems like a silent prayer to pure beauty.
