In the green heart of Basilicata: the Vulture Park, between volcanic lakes and magic

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:11

In a hidden corner of Basilicata, where nature tells an ancient story of fire, water, and forests, lies the Vulture Regional Park—a gem still untouched by mass tourism, yet a perfect snapshot of the beauty that authentic Italy has to offer. Here once stood the ancient Vulture volcano, which, though extinct for hundreds of thousands of years, has left behind a unique landscape: its craters have become lakes, and their pure springs give rise to some of Italy’s most famous mineral waters.

The Monticchio Lakes are twin mirrors of water, affectionately called Lago Grande and Lago Piccolo, and they are the true symbol of the Park. Surrounded by a dense amphitheater of vegetation, their dark, mysterious waters create a fairytale-like scenery impossible not to fall in love with. There’s plenty to do here: take a walk, enjoy a pedal boat ride, or simply sit and admire the landscape—perhaps while tasting a sandwich with the area’s famous caciocavallo podolico cheese.

Overlooking the smaller lake, the Abbey of San Michele stands on a cave once venerated by the Lombards, carved directly into the rock. It’s the perfect spot to admire both twin lakes from above, wrapped in a magical atmosphere. For the faithful, the church’s interior offers a profound sense of spirituality.

But the Vulture is also a land of excellent wines, such as the prestigious Aglianico del Vulture DOCG, and of ancient traditions. The region is both the birthplace and the production center of this renowned wine, a true symbol of Basilicata’s enological heritage.

Scattered throughout the area are charming villages such as Rionero in Vulture, Barile, Melfi, and Ripacandida, offering lively festivals and warm hospitality.

Visiting the Vulture means living a different, extraordinary experience—immersed in deep silence and surrounded by nature’s greenest hues. It’s the perfect destination for those seeking authenticity, history, and depth, far from the most crowded and conventional tourist spots.
