Neapolis and the Siren: Pro‑Biennale spotlights Naples' archaeological heritage

The Pro‑Biennale initiative aims to promote Naples as a Mediterranean showcase by connecting contemporary art with the archaeological heritage of Neapolis. The project seeks to make excavations and historical evidence along the coast and within the urban area more visible and accessible, offering visitor routes and opportunities for scientific and cultural study.

Historical context and archaeological resources

Naples preserves remains spanning from Magna Graecia to the Roman period: temples, traces of poleis (city‑states), coastal settlements and ceramic finds that testify to millennia of Mediterranean exchange. Evidence includes mural paintings, pottery and urban remains that help reconstruct daily life and the cultural and commercial relationships between East and West.

  • Coastal excavations and port sites: remains documenting maritime routes and settlements tied to seafaring activities.
  • Temples and sacred areas: structures and finds that illuminate ancient religious practices.
  • Urban settlements: housing, streets and public spaces that reveal the layout of ancient poleis.
  • Artistic and craft materials: murals, ceramics and everyday objects preserved in museums and storage facilities.

Goals and operational approach

The initiative aims to:

  • link archaeological research with contemporary artistic practices to enhance heritage value;
  • establish a local scientific committee to coordinate excavations, cataloguing and communication;
  • promote visitor routes combining archaeological areas, museums and artistic installations;
  • engage local institutions and cultural stakeholders for shared territorial management.

Practical information for visitors and professionals

Initial public and press meetings have been held to outline the project's vision and highlight the archaeological potential of the city. For the public, a phased release of itineraries, guided tours and themed events is planned; cultural operators and researchers are encouraged to follow official updates for collaboration opportunities.

Note: details on openings, routes and participation methods will be announced in advance by the responsible institutions and project curators. The initiative aims to support research, protection and sustainable enjoyment of the archaeological heritage with scientific rigor.
