Holy Week in Sassari: schedule and practical information

In Sassari's historic centre Holy Week is a time of strong cultural and religious atmosphere: local confraternities perform age-old rites alongside concerts and public events. The programme preserves its devotional core while offering visitors a chance to explore Sardinian Easter traditions.

  • Sunday 29 March (Palm Sunday) – 10:30: procession from Santa Caterina to the Cathedral of San Nicola with blessing of the palms.
  • Monday 30 March – exhibition of the Calvary simulacra at the Cathedral of San Nicola. 20:00: band concert In Passione Domini at the church of San Donato.
  • Tuesday 31 March – 18:00: solemn procession of the wooden statues of the Passion starting at the Cathedral, with stops at confraternity churches; 20:00: musical programme Light of Easter at the church of the Rosario.
  • Wednesday 1 April – 18:30: procession of the Sorrowful Madonna departs from the church of Sant'Andrea, follows a route through the centre and returns to Sant'Andrea.
  • Thursday 2 April – 18:30: Mass of the Lord's Supper and foot washing at San Nicola; from 21:30, vigils and visits to the altars of repose in many churches (the traditional Sepulchre Ceremonies).
  • Friday 3 April – 08:30: Raising of the Christ at the church of the Santissima Trinità with traditional chants; 09:30: procession of the Sorrowful Madonna from Sant'Antonio Abate, visiting seven churches in the historic centre; afternoon liturgy of the Passion and the deposition (S'Iscravamentu).
  • Saturday 4 April – 22:00: Easter Vigil at the Cathedral of San Nicola.
  • Sunday 5 April (Easter) – 10:15: procession of the Risen Christ from the Santissima Trinità and the Madonna's procession from Sant'Antonio Abate; around 10:30 the two processions meet in Piazza Santa Caterina (S'Incontru) and the concluding celebration takes place in the Cathedral at 11:00.
  • Monday 6 April – a day at the Ippodromo Pinna for social gatherings and music: from 11:00 the Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna with Denise Gueye and Giuliano Rassu; from 15:00 DJ set by Jannemuru and informal activities.

Recommended visits

To better understand the local traditions, visit the Sacred and Profane section of the City Museum (Palazzo di Città), which documents Holy Week customs and displays Eugenio Tavolara's Procession of the Mysteries — twenty-five polychrome wooden figures carved in 1928.
